MOVING TOWARDS WHAT YOU WANT

There is so much pressure on us to measure our success in terms of deadlines, clocks and schedules.  By the end of the week … the end of the month … the end of the year … I’m going to have that difficult conversation … exercise more, manage my time better … organize my papers etc, etc.

A kinder way to use time to help us achieve our goals may be to work towards what we want, keeping our dreams in mind, but focusing on the next step rather than the final step.  Many of the situations we would like to change have developed over time – an unspoken idea here, a half a kilo there, a small pile of papers there.  Before we realize it things are no longer as we wish.

Often what stops us taking any action at all is a belief that it is just too big to tackle.

These seven steps may help:

  1. Focus on what life will be like when you are successful.  Visualize it, dream it and identify the benefits of tackling the issue.
  2. Focus on the present situation; describe the reality and the impact on your life.  Be clear about what you don’t like about it.
  3. Identify what it will take to close the gap between how things are now and how you’d like them to be.
  4. Take the first step to move from where you are now to where you want to be.
  5. Reflect at the end of each day about your progress towards your goals.
  6. Keep going
  7. Celebrate your successes.

Taking small steps towards a preferred future will build feelings of success and achieve results.  Remember, as Paul Kelly & Kevin Carmody sang, from little things big things grow.
